Methodology
Radiometer ABL90
Performing Laboratory
Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center
Specimen Requirements
Must be collected at HRRMC
Specimen Type: Whole blood, arterial
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Safe PICO self-filling syringe
Acceptable: Dark-green top
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Specimen must be collected at HRRMC
2. Draw blood at least 20 minutes after a ventilator adjustment.
3. If physician collects sample from femoral artery, then whole blood from a dark-green tube is appropriate.
4. Other arterial collections (brachial or radial artery) should be collected in Safe PICO self-filling syringe, but a dark-green tube is acceptable.

Reference Values
pH: 7.35-7.45
pCO2: 32-48 mmHg
tCO2: 22.30-28.4 mmol/L
pO2: 60-83 mmHg
HCO3: 20-28 mmol/L
Base Excess: -2.0-2.7 mmol/L
mO2 SAT: 90-95%
Applications: Traditional pH and blood gas analysis establishes the acid-base status of blood by measuring pH, pCO2, tCO2, HCO3, base excess and hemoglobin. It also gives information concerning the oxygen status of blood by measuring pO2, mO2, Saturation, O2 content and O2 capacity.
