Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Vaginal swab

Container/Tube: Transport tube with solvent

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. The laboratory will provide the collection kit to OB.

2. Nursing staff will collect the specimen as follows:

a. The sample is collected from the surface of the vagina using the polyester swab provided. 

b. With the patient lying on her back, hold the swab in the middle and carefully insert the swab into the vagina until the fingers contact skin, no more that 2 to 3 inches deep. 

c. Withdraw the swab after 1 minute.

3. Laboratory staff will wait for the swab and insert it into the solvent and take to laboratory to complete analysis.
